BIOGRAPHY

The Sins of Thy Beloved is a gothic doom metal band, formed in Bryne, Norway in November 1996. The band currently consists of Anita Auglend (vocals), Glenn Morten Nordbø (guitars, vocals), Arild Christensen (guitars, vocals), Ola Aarrestad (bass), Maike Olaisen (keyboards), and Stig Johansen (drums).

The band was formed by Glenn Morten Nordbø, Arild Christensen, and Stig Johansen. The band was initially called “Purgatory” but they soon decided to change their name to something less common. Anita Auglend and Ola Aarrestad joined the band shortly thereafter, and they recorded their first demo “All Alone” in January-February 1997. Anders Thue and Ingfrid Stensland then joined before they recorded their second demo “Silent Pain” in January 1998. Pete Johansen played the violin on that demo though he did not officially joined the band until the recording of their first full-length album “Lake of Sorrow” later in 1998. They toured across Europe, before recording their second full-length album “Perpetual Desolation” in 2000. During the following tour, Anita Auglend, Anders Thue, and Ingfrid Stensland grew weary of traveling and left the band in 2001. A live performance was released on CD and VHS in 2001, though it was not distributed worldwide and is thus very hard to come by. The band has been dormant since the departure of its three members. Pete Johansen has since left to play the violin on several Tristania albums.

The band is often compared to gothic metal bands such as Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy, mainly because of the band’s combination of a female soprano voice with male death grunts; this trait is common to gothic metal in general, and is known as the “Beauty and the Beast”. Their music features death metal/doom metal rhythmics enhanced by the prominent use of violins, especially on the “Lake of Sorrow” album, typical of many gothic doom metal bands. Their live recordings offer a sound closer to traditional death metal than their studio albums which make heavy use of arrangements and effects.

In 2007 Anita Auglend returned to the band.

Midnattsol is a nordic folk metal band from Norway and Germany. The band was formed in 2002 and currently consists of vocalist Carmen Elise Espenæs (younger sister of Liv Kristine Espenæs Krull of Leaves’ Eyes and ex-Theatre of Tragedy), bassist Birgit Öllbrunner, drummer Chris Merzinsky, keyboardist Daniel Fischer, and guitarist Daniel Droste. Guitarist Christian Hector recently announced his departure and the band is currently searching for a new guitarist.

Their sound is essentialy symphonic metal, with some folk influences in the melodies. Their lyrics are largely based on Norwegian folk tales. Their first full-length album, “Where Twilight Dwells”, was released in 2005; their second album, “Nordlys”, was released on March 28, 2008.

Midnattsol means “midnight sun” in Norwegian. Although their sound can be classified as symphonic metal, the band prefers to call their style “nordic folk metal” because of the folk elements in their music and occasional Norwegian lyrics.

Guitarists Daniel Droste and Christian Hector are also playing in Ahab, a German funeral doom metal band.

Chris Merzinsky and Birgit Öllbrunner are also playing in the band R:I:P.

BIOGRAPHY

Trail of Tears is a symphonic gothic metal/black metal band (with death metal and industrial metal influences) from Kristiansand, Norway. The band was formed in 1994 under the name of Natt (Norwegian for “Night”), but later changed its name to Trail of Tears in 1997, to reflect changes in sound and line-up.

Through most of their career the band emphasized the use of contrasting soprano vocals and death grunt vocals, but with the release of “Free Fall Into Fear” — in 2005 — the band switched this contrast mostly to tenor vocals and death growls, with rare soprano passages. As of 2009 they have released a total of six albums, the most recent being Bloodstained Endurance released May 27, 2009.

Kjetil Nordhus, Runar Hansen, Kjell Rune Hagen, and Jonathan Perez walked out in November 2006 due to bad organisation leading to monetary loss for all the members of the band and posted a statement on the Trail of Tears’ website saying the band had split up. Ronny Thorsen soon issued a statement saying they would in fact be carrying on without them and that they couldn’t have chosen a worse time to leave the band due to the upcoming tour for the album Existentia. All tour dates had to be canceled.

On February 1, 2007 it was stated that former Trail of Tears vocalist Cathrine Paulsen re-joined the band. The band was also confirmed for 2007’s Sweden Rock Festival, which was then followed with an extensive North American headlining tour alongside Echoes of Eternity and Unexpect.

Their debut album, “Lovelorn,” was released in 2004. The second album, “Vinland Saga,” was released 30th of May 2005, and retells the tale of the discovery of Vinland (i.e. North America) by Leif Erikson. The EP “Legend Land” was released on June 2, 2006 as a followup to Vinland Saga.

Liv Kristine created the band name, which is a homophone for the way “Liv’s Eyes” is pronounced by a Norwegian. “Leaves” is connected to nature, which has always been the biggest inspiration for her. Liv Kristine writes all of the lyrics for the band.

The band started as doom/death, being one of the pioneers of the genre. After two albums they switched their style to atmospheric gothic metal on "Aégis". BIOGRAPHY

SIRENIA was formed by Morten Veland in january 2001. Morten’s musical work was already well known through his work with his former band Tristania, a band he co-founded back in the mid nineties. Being the main songwriter for this band he was a part of defining the gothic metal sound from a very early time on. With SIRENIA his intention was to bring everything to the next level, a task he succeeded to fulfil. Up to date SIRENIA has released 3 albums and an EP, their latest work ‘Nine Destinies and a Downfall’ made it to the charts in 6 countries, receiving great reviews worldwide. Meanwhile their single ‘My Mind’s Eye’ taken from the same album topped radio charts in several countries. Their new album ‘The 13th Floor’ was released on the 23rd of January via Nuclear Blast Records.

SIRENIA sounds like a mixture of gothic metal and rock with classical influences, in addition to some elements from more extreme metal genres. Their sound have a solid base in the powerful drums and bass supported by massive rhythm guitars, dressed with atmospheric keyboards and spiced with melancholic violins and 12-string guitars. The vocal styles are diverse and consist of female vocals, choirs, growls, screams, clean male vocals, whispers and samples. The songs are very intense and the atmosphere changes frequently. The lyrics are based on reflections on life, death, love, hate, paranoia, anxiety and mental decline in general.

The band has been through some line-up changes over the years, but has now settled with a very strong line-up. In addition to Morten performing guitars and vocals the band consists of Ailyn: female vocals, Jonathan A. Perez: drums and Michael S. Krumins: guitars.
